Preliminary Evaluation

1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?

My group consisted of me(Sam Hooper), Charlotte Ellis and Lorna George; overall i found that we worked well as a team and were able to efficiently use our time in a way that would result in the best possible preliminary music video that we could create. The majority of the editing was carried out by Charlotte and Lorna because they both had the necessary skills to edit in a way that suited the actual Kathleen video(Catfish and the bottlemen). I did spend some time going through the video on premiere to ensure that it was as similar to the video as we could get it. Between all of us the individual tasks were spread evenly and fairly, which is another factor that led to a good quality video being made.

2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?

We took a screenshot from each individual shot that was in the video, and then from there we used this as a border to work around. A discussion was undertaken between are group to choose where best to take the shots and also the best possible way to initiate our ideas.


3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?


The use of carol Vernallis theory is clearly visible throughout our music video. Firstly the use of the editing function was used to showcast our star, who in this instance was Charlotte; furthermore it created aesthetically pleasing visual strands in its own rights. We made sure our singer was mostly at the front and centre of the frame, this way the audiences focus would be specifically on this person.

4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?

Most of the technical usage was carried out by Lorna who was our head editor, she used the adobe premiere software and then researched various techniques to ensure that our prelim was as close to the actual music video as we could possibly get it. Also the use of a camera was necessary to film everything, so Charlotte brought in her personal camera because it could give us a more precise edge over the school equipment.

5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?

For me the first thing to consider was the song choice, because we would be repetitively looking over/editing it, so I wanted to make certain that we believed it was possible to produce otherwise we would be setting unrealistic targets. The next big step was making sure that the locations for each different shot could be found, otherwise it could mess up the whole video; for example, a video where there is a rainforest in the background would be pretty hard to copy. There were also other things to consider, such as, props and lighting which was actually easy for us to arrange because of the schools drama and music department that consists of high quality equipment that is suitable for music related activities.

6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?

In the end our video was very close to the original and being honest this was mostly down to Lorna who spent a lot of time finding out the perfect editing tools to match the official music video. In hindsight I would try to choose a song that we already knew the lyrics too, because this would make the filming process much quicker; and thus would enable more time to be spent on editing and various other sections.

7) What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video, do you think?

I have learnt the extension to how many different shots there are to choose from, and even better the various locations that music videos can be set in. I also have found out the importance of suiting the video to the specific genre that it is categorised into, I believe this to be a crucial part of planning and one that must be carried out with group assurance. Although that's why its good to take in everyone's ideas because they could have a completely unique outlook on the concepts involved with making a music video; so I will definitely have a big discussion with my group when making the next music video.

8) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film? 
I think me and my group found it more difficult to act and film the music video rather than the film opening, because it involved lip syncing which was harder than expected. The main difference was that with the music video we had to be more precise as we were trying to copy something, whilst with the film opening we could create it from scratch with our own visions.

9) What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group member? 

What is noticeable for me is the fact that I prove more efficient at the written based tasks rather than the editing, I prefer to do the writing tasks and this prevents me from gaining knowledge revolving around editing; so this is what I will aim to change with the next music video.

10) Looking at the other group's videos which do you think were most successful and why?

Looking back at our video, it is visible that we have had the difficult task of having to find new editing techniques that we previously had no idea how to create or use. A good example was this blurred vision shot that involved having our main singer(Charlotte) being seen as double vision, but Lorna found out how to do it and even made it accurate to the original.


Props and Costume

The props and costumes which were needed were pretty basic and easy to acquire. Thanks to our school music department we were able to use a microphone and stand. Our media department had a drum kit and two guitars and I brought in drum sticks from home. We all had black clothing so we each brought in clothes to change into when we filmed. We discussed in school what was needed and then arranged from there who was going to acquire them.

Production Diary- Preliminary

26/06/17 - Today we were given the task to recreate the first minute of a music video of our choice and make it look as professional as possible. In my group there is myself, Lorna and Sam. Lorna was not here today but me and Sam chose to recreate the music video for the song 'Ride' by Twenty One Pilots as it is filmed in the woods and does not involve many special effects but still remains a challenge to us as it is a performance video which we have not attempted before. Between us we decided that Sam will be the drummer and I will be the main singer and Lorna will film us. This particular video caught our eye as at the start it looks quite unprofessional but the sudden change in lighting from day to night makes the video interesting and unique.

27/06/2017 - In this lesson Lorna is playing with some editing to try and see if she can edit a clip to make a daytime clip look as though it is shot as night time. If this is successful it would save us from filming at night time but if not we will have to film it at a weekend. Meanwhile, Sam is screen- grabbing each shot from the music video so when it comes to filming we know what order each shot goes in. We also made a list of props what we will need for filming on Sunday which include: Harry's drum kit, electric guitar, black sleeveless top, black jeans, dark green coat, black green coat, black beanie, red sweat bands, drum kits, microphone, mic stand and camera and tripod.

28/06/17 - Today our group were looking at different locations in the field in our school property to see if any places were suitable to film the music video in. We were looking for a place with lots of trees as if we were in the forest, just like where they were in the music video. We found a spot that would be suitable for our recreation but we realised that we would have to film at night for the video which would be a problem as we could not access the school grounds at night. When assessing our situation we thought that a music video that was able to be shot in school would be a lot more practical for us as we could film it during school time. After searching some more, we all decided to change the music video we were originally going to do, to 'Kathleen' by Catfish and the Bottlemen as the background is plain black and would only need a few props as the main focus is the editing of different colours.

29/06/17 - Today we filmed in the drama studio, filming shot by shot. we used a projector so we could watch the video as we filmed to get the shots right. we used over head lights and black out curtains to match the setting of the 'Kathleen' music video. we recorded many shots multiple times to ensure we had the best version for editing. Lorna watched a you tube clip to see how we could get the same effects on our music video.

30/06/17 - Today we filmed the shots we had not managed to film yesterday. we also re filmed some shots after looking at some footage from yesterday we decided some scenes we could do better.

03/07/17 - Today we began putting the clips together in time and further playing around with edits to match the effects in the 'Kathleen' video. Lorna figured out how to get similar effects and edits of those in the 'Kathleen' music video.

04/07/17- Today we filmed some more shots and asked other people from another group to help us as the shot was with 4 people and we only have 3 in our group. Lorna filmed the shots and Sam and Charlotte performed with two other friends. Lorna and Charlotte also did some more editing.

05/07/17- Today we focused on editing, trying to get the effects as similar to the official video as possible.

06/07/17- Today we filmed the last 2 clips and continued editing. Lorna edited the last few clips and added the effects. she also made some finishing touches and exported the video. It was then uploaded online.

The hills- The Weeknd (Music Video Research)



The video starts of as a narrative, in which the main performer has been in a bad car crash and leaves the car looking injured and in shock, he then proceeds to help the other people who were involved with the accident. The artist then starts to lip sync the music whilst also staying in role, for example, the women who were there with him start to take out their aggression on him, and as they walk away the car is perceived to explode in the background. Overall I would say the video is quite a boring and insignificant one, but it does suit the music very well with its monotone aurora. The lyrics also fit the video very well as it portrays the life of someone who is literally 'fucked' up. I think we could apply this music video to ours, by attempting to find a suitable storyline that centres on the lyrics of our song.

Beibs in the trap- Travis Scott (Music Video Research)



The music video starts of with an awesome shot from beneath the artists, I think that the camera is looking through a glass floor, but it makes this effect that the artist is practically flying. The video then includes an alternative location with a group of woman that are sexualised for the attention of the audience. At the part of the song where it says 'that coca' which is referring to cocaine, there is a shot of Travis Scott the main performer kicking a white substance. The video gradually becomes more and more confusing and trippy as the lights flash repetitively. It continuous in this way throughout the rest of the song. In direct referral to the lyrcis, it is clear that this song is completely drug related which is why it can be considered a good comparison to our video. I would strive for our video to use similar trippy and unique shots to make our video stand out from others.


Pursuit of Happiness- Kid Cudi (Music Video Research)



The music video initialises with a vinyl player being started, and Kid Cudi the main artist is sitting at a party drinking champagne to himself from the bottle; it is clear to see he is secluded from the other people and almost in his 'own world'. As soon as the bass drops everything around him turns to slow motion, whilst Cudi remains in the current time. The performer is singing along and it remains with this type of shot for a while; I can perceive everyone involved with the party having a good time and consuming alcohol. There is a small feature with Drake in the music video, and considering how big of an artist Drake is, this is significant to showing the prestige of the video. At the end of the clip the last shots involve Kid Cudi being wasted and struggling to walk in straight line. This connects with the lyrics very well as the song is all about living your life to the full. Therefore after analysing this music video we can relate how as a group we wish to have an individual performer that is the focus of the story line and the plot. As well as this the plot of Kid Cudi's music video includes a relaxed and party vibe with alcohol, this inspires us as our music video is about drugs and having a good time.

In this particular music video involves lots of visual art in the form of children's drawings. I think its very creative and suits the song perfectly. A lot of the effects involve the lyrics coming up on the video with different patterns and movements which specifically relate to the words in the song. The song is all about describing various super heroes and the powers that they possess, and in the end the main artist realises that he has no gifts like this; but he can still find love with a girl because those are not the qualities she is looking for, all she wants is 'somebody to kiss'. Hopefully my group will be able to use adobe after effects to create similar lyrical transitions that are in time with the music.


Pools- Glass Animals (Music Video Research)



Its very hard for me to put into words the concept of this music video, simply because the illustrations and so creative, that its difficult to postulate what is actually going on. I'm certain that this is the purpose of the video, in its 'trippy' nature, whereby it leads the audience in a state of incomprehension. The interesting art is formed by a play-doh sort of animation. Overall I found the music video enjoyable to watch and though I didn't actually understand what was happening it was intriguing me to watch on. From the lyrics I have perceived a love story in which one of the partners in the relationship has ended, but the person made their way back to happiness. The aspects of this video that I would retrieve ideas from, is how eccentric and alluring it actually is, as it is constantly making me want to see more.


Viva La Vida- Coldplay (Music Video Research)



The term Viva La Vida literally means 'live life' and in this way the revolution was formed to force the people in power to give the people free will. It starts of with what I presume is a rose, spinning around; I then noticed that the music video has this same effect over all the shots, which is to make it look older and historical. The band is wearing old fashioned clothing whilst holding modern instruments such as an electric guitar and drums. The video is very performance based with Chris Martin singing along, as most of the focus is on his image. The music video is the same all the way through and in this way it could have involved more creativity and innovation, in order to make it a memorable and unique video. From the lyrics I believe the song to portray the main singer as someone who used to have authority and power, sort of like royalty; but in the end this is taken from him, and if I made a bold assumption by the common people who are typically the ones to orchestrate a revolution. To be honest, this video doesn't appeal to me that much, seeing as it is relatively boring and lacks uniqueness.
